Breast ptosis, commonly known as sagging breasts, is a common concern among many women as they age. Despite regular exercise and a balanced diet, it is not possible to naturally restore breast elasticity. The fat layer within the breasts cannot be transformed into muscle, and once the skin has sagged, it cannot regain its previous position.

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure performed by skilled plastic surgeons to restore breast firmness and shape. It is important not to confuse this procedure with breast augmentation using implants or reduction mammoplasty, which involves reducing breast size. During a mastopexy, excess sagging and stretched skin are carefully removed, and the breast tissues are repositioned and secured. The surgery can also involve adjusting breast size according to the patient's preferences.

Breast lift procedures have been performed since the early 20th century, with significant advancements made in the late 1960s, allowing surgeons to successfully restore breast shape and contour. At Plastic Surgery Turkey Group, our experienced team of plastic surgeons utilizes modern equipment to perform breast lift surgeries, effectively tightening the stretched skin and restoring the youthful appearance of the breasts. We aim to preserve the natural aesthetics and achieve a harmonious breast shape for our patients

There are several techniques available in plastic surgery for mastopexy, and the choice of method depends on the individual patient's indications and preoperative evaluations. Each technique varies in complexity and the extent of tissue manipulation.

The following are the commonly used methods for breast lift:

  • Periareolar mastopexy: This method is suitable for patients with minor breast tissue deformity, typically with smaller breast sizes (first or second size). It is considered a less invasive approach, resulting in a quicker recovery during the rehabilitation period.
  • Vertical mastopexy: This technique is recommended for patients with moderate breast sagging (second degree ptosis), often with second or third breast sizes. It involves vertical incisions and allows for significant lifting and reshaping of the breasts.
  • Anchor mastopexy: This method, known for its complexity, is used for severe cases of breast ptosis, including larger and more neglected breasts. Although it is considered a more invasive technique, it is effective in restoring breast elasticity and achieving satisfactory results.

Ptosis of the breasts can occur due to various factors, such as pregnancy and extended breastfeeding, larger breast size, natural aging, significant weight loss, refusal to wear supportive bras, or genetic predisposition.

Regardless of the underlying cause, there are common indications for breast lift surgery:

  • Skin sagging and stretching of the breast tissue, regardless of the degree of ptosis.
  • Breast deformity and loss of elasticity.
  • Visible asymmetry, including variations in breast shape and size.
  • Nipple and areola descent, resulting in a lower position.
  • Presence of stretch marks on the breasts

Description of the Procedure

1

Preparation for Breast Lift

Preparation for a breast lift surgery is essential to ensure a smoother and more successful procedure. Prior to the operation, the patient will be required to undergo various tests and procedures, which may include:

  • General and biochemical blood tests.
  • General urine test.
  • Tests for HIV, hepatitis B and C.
  • Blood clotting test.
  • Breast ultrasound.
  • Fluorography (chest X-ray).
  • Blood type and Rh factor determination.

Additionally, it is important for the patient to make certain lifestyle adjustments in the weeks leading up to the surgery. These may include:
  • Ceasing the use of specific medications, including vitamins, blood thinners, hormonal, and anti-inflammatory drugs, as advised by the surgeon.
  • Quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol consumption.
  • Following a recommended diet plan for three days before the operation, which may involve avoiding heavy foods.
  • Fasting for at least 12 hours prior to the surgery, abstaining from any food or drink.

A month before the procedure, you should stop taking certain medications, including vitamins and blood thinners, as well as hormonal and anti-inflammatory drugs. Smoking and alcohol are banned. Performing Breast Lift

The technique used for a breast lift (mastopexy) depends on the degree of sagging (mastoptosis) of the breasts:

  • Periareolar Technique: In this method, a small incision is made around the areola. The excess skin is removed, and the nipple is lifted. The incision is then closed with stitches. This technique can be performed under local anesthesia and typically takes around 30-40 minutes. As the breast tissue is not extensively affected, the recovery period is relatively easy and quick.
  • Vertical Technique: The vertical mastopexy involves an incision made around and extending from the areola. This technique is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Excess tissue is removed, particularly from the area adjacent to the submammary fold. This method helps to achieve a well-shaped breast and reposition the nipples.
  • Anchor Technique: The anchor breast lift is a more complex procedure lasting approximately 2 hours and performed under general anesthesia. It involves an incision made around the perimeter of the areola, extending downward to the submammary fold. Excess tissue is excised, and the shape of the breasts is enhanced while lifting the nipples.

In addition to restoring breast elasticity and shape, mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola

Frequently asked questions

  • HOW DO I KNOW THAT I NEED A BREAST LIFT?

Indicators for a breast lift are the following factors:

    • The breasts are pendulous. It has lost volume, became flat.
    • Nipples pointing downwards;
    • Areoles have become larger in size, the breasts, on the contrary, have flattened;
    • The breasts skin has lost elasticity, firmness. It has become pendulous, lost its shape.

A breast lift may be needed in the case when the breast has lost its youthful shape, roundness. This often happens after breastfeeding, weight loss.

  • DO I NEED IMPLANTS FOR A BREAST LIFT?

The breast lift procedure sometimes involves using breast implants. But it is not often needed . For example, if a patient has natural perky breasts shape, she does not need to increase it. It is enough to lift it to return an attractive appearance. Mastopexy helps you to get rid of excess skin. And if a woman does not want to increase her breast size or change its shape, then she can refuse implants.

  • WHAT IS AN ANCHOR BREAST LIFT?

Anchor lift is a complex surgical procedure performed with serious deformities of the breasts. The surgery was named because of the stitches resembling an anchor in shape. The incision is first made in the breast fold, it moves vertically to the lower edges of the areola and wraps around them. This surgery gives the breasts any shape. Anchor lift is performed at the 3rd stage of ptosis, when the nipples are lowered by more than 2 cm.

This method not only lifts the breast, but also to change the shape, position of the areoles, to enlarge or reduce the breasts.

  • WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS?

The rehabilitation process is extremely important. It depends on how quickly the patient will recover, how noticeable the scars will be. The most difficult are the first 14 days after surgery, especially if the lift was in combination with the installation of implants. At this stage, the patient feels general malaise, soreness in the breasts.

It is necessary to follow all the doctor`s recommendations. The first few weeks you need to exclude physical activity, temperature changes, bad habits, including alcohol intake. The breast becomes swollen with bruises, the sensitivity of the nipples is disturbed. This is a normal phenomenon that goes away a month after surgery. It is important to carefully take care of the scars, following all the recommendations of the surgeon.

  • WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS AFTER A BREAST LIFT?

Like any operation, mastopexy can cause complications. But if you have chosen our clinic, then you should not worry. Our plastic surgeons closely monitor the patients and continue to keep in touch with them until their full recovery.

Before going for a breast lift, you need to make sure that there are no contraindications to the operation. Otherwise, complications cannot be avoided, and the fault of doctors in this will not be.

In the first days after the procedure, there will be painful sensations in breasts with the further appearance of hematomas and swelling of tissues. This is a protective reaction of the body to injury, and over time all unpleasant sensations will pass.

Also, after mastopexy, body temperature may rise, inflammatory processes may develop. But in our clinic, they carefully monitor the condition of patients and prevent and eliminate all possible complications in advance.

  • WHAT WILL BE THE SCARS AND IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET RID OF THEM?

The visibility of scars depends on the professionalism of the surgeon and the individual characteristics of the patient, including genetics, age. It is also important to follow the doctor`s recommendations after surgery. This will make the scars barely visible. After a period of rehabilitation, they will become thin and light.

To get rid of scars, various methods are used. These include hormonal injections, chemical peeling, laser resurfacing. These methods will not completely remove the scars, but they will make them less noticeable. A radical method is surgical intervention when the scar tissue is excised.

  • WHEN CAN I RETURN TO A NORMAL LIFESTYLE?

A gradual return to the usual lifestyle begins 4-5 days after a breast lift. The main thing is to avoid serious loads, especially on the hand area. The total rehabilitation period after the procedure is about 1.5-2 months. The specific time depends on the type of operation. Recovery after a standard breast lift takes less time than with a procedure that was combined with breast augmentation implants.

  • CAN I BREASTFEED AFTER A BREAST LIFT?

Yes, you can breastfeed after a lift. But it is worth remembering that with mastopexy, the tissue of the breasts is rearranged. Therefore, the operation may affect the production of breast milk. Many patients tend to have a breast lift after the birth of children. If breastfeeding is completed and pregnancy is not planned, you don`t have to worry about possible changes in the breasts. It is recommended to have children a year after surgery.
