Hair transplantation consists in transferring pieces of skin with healthy hair follicles to a problem area on the body of the same person. Hair grows cyclically, with successive phases. There are three phases of normal hair life:

• Anagenesis (2-5 years) – the origin of a hair in a follicle, its growth, a set of volume and the acquisition of color.
• Catagenesis is the phase when cell division and hair growth stops.
• Teleginesis – the hair papilla separates from the bulb, which is pushed to the surface of the skin. As a result, the hair along with the bulb falls out. This is a normal process called physiological alopecia.

The norm is a constant loss of 60-100 hairs per day. However, intense hair loss (massive and extensive alopecia) can be pathological, leading to receding hairlines, bald spots and complete baldness.

In most cases, massive loss of transplanted hair occurs after transplantation. This phenomenon is considered normal, because it is associated with physical stress. Normally, the process is reversible, and baldness turns out to be temporary. But there are cases of pathological shock hair loss forever.

There are many reasons for this phenomenon, but the main one is an acute shortage of graft nutrition (a skin area with 1-3 healthy hair follicles) for the first time after transplantation. Other reasons can only make things worse.

In any case, patients do not like it, they feel disappointed and annoyed. After all, they did not hope at all for the total loss of all transplanted hair after a rather expensive operation… Nevertheless, you need to be prepared for this.

Shock hair loss is called because it appears after a powerful stress – mental or physical. It happens a few weeks after the transplant, the timing is always individual.

Surgery itself is a stressful procedure. The situation is aggravated in the postoperative period by the abrupt cessation of nutrition of hair follicles. Until the transplanted skin takes root, until it sprouts new blood vessels, the follicles do not receive nutrients, minerals and vitamins in sufficient quantities for normal hair growth and development.

But a skin graft operation can also trigger an internal, non-obvious stress mechanism against the background of some asymptomatic disease or genetic predisposition to baldness.

Another reason for shock hair loss is an attack of immune cells. There is a failure of immunity, as a result, your own hair follicles, simply transplanted to another place, are perceived as foreign tissues.

That is why a thorough diagnosis of the entire body is required before the operation in order to exclude the possibility of irreversible shock hair loss after transplantation.

With the normal course of engraftment of transplanted tissues, the first signs of the beginning of hair regrowth in a new place appear after about three months, not earlier. Why is it taking so long?

After graft transplantation, adhesive inflammation develops in a new place. It will take many days for the body to figure out whats what. The inflammation stops, and each graft sprouts its own capillary, carrying blood with oxygen and nutrients.

Only after the complete restoration of blood supply, i.e. 3-4 months after the transplant, hair growth begins. This is a normal period, which may be delayed under the influence of some unaccounted negative influences, for example, internal illness.

Going to a hair transplant operation, any patient should be prepared for the fact that such a nuisance as irreversible shock loss of transplanted hair can happen to him. This risk persists even in the best clinics, with the best doctors, but it is small.
