What is SMAS lifting?
Lifting the oval of the face, eliminating ptosis of the eyelids or the second chin – we are used to it being
done
exclusively surgically. And the desired result is achieved through pain, swelling and postoperative depression.
But
recently there was a procedure that could soon replace facial contouring surgery -
SMAS-lifting!
In 1975, an article appeared that significantly influenced modern cosmetology. French scientists have thoroughly
studied all the layers of the skin, and have identified one that no one has ever heard of before - SMAS
(Superficial
Muscle-Aponeurotic System) or the superficial muscular-aponeurotic system. Scientists were able to prove that
this
layer is responsible for the transfer of movements from facial muscles to tissues. Moreover, in the course of
research it was found that exposure to this layer helps to achieve certain changes in the condition of the skin.
Features of the procedure
In simple words, this is an impact on the SMAS layer for the purpose of rejuvenation. Until recently, only
surgeons
could achieve such an effect – but they simply removed a layer of skin, tightening it. Now there is no need for
such
a radical measure – you can eliminate the signs of aging with just one short procedure.
SMAS lifting is the effect on the same SMAS layer by ultrasonic waves. At the same time, the equipment allows
you to
direct waves of such a length that they affect the specified tissues, and nothing more. This can be achieved
thanks
to modern devices - they allow you to determine the exact depth of the SMAS layer.
Microsfocused ultrasonic waves, having reached the specified layer, heat it up quite strongly. The appearance of
coagulation (the depth of the foci reaches 5 mm) contributes to the consolidation of existing collagen and
stimulate
the active production of a new one. This is the peculiarity of the technology – the activation of collagen
production contributes to the gradual smoothing of wrinkles. That is, every day after the procedure, its effect
will
be noticeable better.
Main indications and contraindications
One of the common mistakes regarding SMAS lifting is that it suits everyone. That`s not so. The procedure is
carried
out only for persons 35 years and older. This age restriction is explained precisely by the effect obtained. Up
to
the specified age, the skin is considered young enough, not requiring such procedures.
The main indications for SMAS-lifting:
- Flabbiness, sagging of the skin of the face, neck;
- Drooping corners of the mouth;
- Pronounced nasolabial folds;
- Ptosis (eyebrows, love);
- Second chin (or when a chin lift surgery is needed due to stretched skin);
- the "floated" oval of the face.
You can get rid of all these problems with just one SMAS-lifting procedure. But, like any other cosmetic
procedure,
this type of lifting has certain contraindications. Namely:
- Age up to 35 years;
- Inflammatory processes of the skin of the face;
- Unhealed wounds, abrasions on the face;
- Cystic acne, boils;
- Infectious, inflammatory diseases in the acute phase;
- Pregnancy, breast-feeding period;
- Autoimmune infections;
- Mental disorders.
The procedure has no restrictions regarding the maximum age. In other words, it is an ideal solution to the
problem
of aging for those who previously could only be helped by plastic surgery. So, for example, until recently,
eyelid
lift was performed exclusively surgically. The new SMAS lifting system allows you to correct the skin around the
eyes much faster, and without postoperative rehabilitation.
It is not recommended to perform SMAS-lifting on the areas of the face or body where operations have been
performed.
As a rule, dense scars form after surgery, through which ultrasound waves do not pass. Accordingly, the
procedure
carried out in these areas will not give any result.
What is the SMAS lifting line?
This is the line through which the ultrasonic wave is directly supplied. There are different nozzles of devices
for
a certain number of lines. And the same parameter, as a rule, limits the resource capacity of the device. Each
individual zone on the face has its own number of lines. For example, a circular facelift requires 500-700
lines,
the eye area + temples - 50-150, the second chin - 150-200 lines, and so on.
How is the procedure going?
One of the advantages of SMAS lifting, many call the lack of preliminary preparation. The only warning is that
it is
undesirable to carry out various types of peels or deep cleaning before lifting. These are quite traumatic
procedures that can lead to micro-damage to the skin.
The lifting procedure itself is quite simple. Its duration directly depends on the number of processed zones. As
a
rule, it takes 30-90 minutes. First of all, the specialist determines the depth of the SMAS layer and selects
the
appropriate nozzle. The impact, depending on the treated area and the target being pursued, is carried out at a
depth of 1.5 mm to 5 mm on the face and neck, and up to 15 mm on the body. A specific protocol of the procedure
has
been developed for each problem, which specifies both the depth of exposure and the type of nozzle used.
The waves supplied by the device actively affect the SMAS layer itself, and also affect adipose tissue and
dermis.
This allows you to remove excess fat, form a clear contour and stimulate the synthesis of collagen, which is so
useful for the skin.
During the lifting, the patient feels warm, perhaps a slight tingling and discomfort. There are no painful
sensations.
After the lifting is completed, a nourishing mask is made to soothe and moisturize the skin.
After lifting
Another advantage of SMAS is the absence of any restrictions after the procedure. Yes, the first 2-3 should not
be
washed with too hot water and steam the skin. A visit to the sauna or bathhouse after lifting should also be
postponed. But these are the only limitations. No rehabilitation, as after plastic surgery, is needed.
How long does the effect last
Immediately after the SMAS-lifting, a slight improvement in the condition of the skin becomes noticeable. It
looks
fresher and tighter – this is achieved thanks to the primary tissue tightening. But, the distinguishing feature
of
the procedure is precisely that such an effect is cumulative. After lifting, active collagen production begins.
And
this means that every day the condition of the skin will improve. The maximum effect can be seen after 3-4
months.
And this result will last for several years. If desired, you can repeat the procedure. But do not do it earlier
than
in a year.
Plastic surgery or lifting?
SMAS-lifting is a modern technology that may soon replace plastic surgery related to skin tightening. The main
advantages of the procedure can be called:
- ease of execution;
- absence of any rehabilitation after the procedure;
- the opportunity to immediately see the result, since there are no edema and hematomas after lifting;
- absence of postoperative scars.
But do not forget that plastic surgery is still the leader today and gives a more tangible effect that will last
longer.
Conclusion
Today SMAS lifting is at the initial stage of development. The technology has appeared relatively recently,
which
means that it will soon undergo significant improvements. Nevertheless, the procedure is already very popular
and in
demand.
