Thigh Lift

Table of Content
A thigh lift (thighplasty) removes loose skin, and usually some fat, from the thighs and tightens the remaining tissue for a smoother, firmer contour. It is most often requested for the inner thighs, where skin tends to sag and fold after significant weight loss or with age, causing chafing and making clothing uncomfortable.
Plastic Surgery Turkey Group (PSTG) helps international patients plan a thigh lift in Turkey: the assessment, travel, stay and follow-up. The operation is carried out by the treating surgeon at a contracted healthcare institution in Istanbul or Antalya. Because the thighs carry weight and move constantly, thigh lift recovery asks more of you than many people expect, and this page sets out what that involves.
Who is a good candidate#
A thigh lift is aimed at excess skin that exercise and weight loss cannot correct. You may be a good candidate if you:
- have loose or hanging skin on the inner thighs, sometimes extending towards the knee;
- experience rubbing, rashes or hygiene problems from skin folds;
- have reached a stable weight, especially after bariatric surgery or major weight loss;
- are in good general health and a non-smoker, or willing to stop well before and after surgery;
- can take time off and follow restrictions on movement during healing.
A thigh lift may not be suitable if you:
- mainly have fat deposits with good skin tone — liposuction alone may give a better result with a much smaller scar;
- are still losing weight or plan to lose more;
- have a history of blood clots, significant varicose veins, lymphoedema or poorly controlled diabetes;
- have a higher body mass index, which raises the risk of wound problems (see Plastic Surgery and BMI).
Techniques and options#
The pattern of incision is chosen according to where the loose skin lies and how much there is.
Inner (medial) thigh lift with a groin incision#
For laxity concentrated in the upper third of the inner thigh, the incision is placed in the groin crease. Skin is lifted upwards and anchored to the firm deep tissue in the groin, which helps prevent the scar from drifting down and reduces pulling on the surrounding area. The scar lies mainly within the underwear line.
Extended (vertical) inner thigh lift#
After major weight loss, loose skin often runs the full length of the inner thigh. Here a vertical incision is added along the inner thigh, sometimes towards the knee, allowing much more skin to be removed. The contour improvement is greater, but so is the length of the scar, which is visible when the inner thighs are seen.
Outer thigh and lower body lifts#
Laxity of the outer thighs is usually treated as part of a lower body lift, which removes a band of skin around the waist and lifts the buttocks and outer thighs together. This is a larger operation and is often discussed alongside a tummy tuck or planned in stages.
Liposuction#
Liposuction is often combined with a thigh lift to reduce fat and refine the shape before the skin is tightened. The surgeon will decide whether it belongs in the same operation.
How the procedure is carried out#
A thigh lift is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes around two to four hours, depending on the technique and any combined procedures.
- Marking. Standing, you are marked to show how much skin will be removed and where the scars will lie.
- Liposuction, if planned. Fat is reduced to allow a smoother contour.
- Skin removal and anchoring. Excess skin is removed and the deeper tissues are secured so that the tension is held by the deep layers rather than the skin edges.
- Closure. The wound is closed in layers; drains may be placed for a few days.
- Compression. Dressings and a compression garment are fitted.
Most patients stay in hospital for at least one night. Walking starts early to lower the risk of blood clots, and clot prevention measures are part of standard care.
Recovery and results#
First week. The thighs feel tight, swollen and bruised, and discomfort is managed with prescribed medication. You walk short distances several times a day but avoid spreading the legs wide, squatting or long periods of sitting, as these put tension on the groin wound. Keeping the groin area clean and dry is especially important.
Weeks two to six. Most people return to daily activities and desk work within one to two weeks. A compression garment is usually worn for several weeks. Exercise is reintroduced gradually, with strenuous activity delayed until your surgeon allows it.
Three to twelve months. Swelling, particularly around the knees and lower legs, can take several months to settle fully. Scars are red at first and gradually fade and flatten over a year or more.
The result is a slimmer, smoother thigh with less rubbing, which many patients notice most in daily comfort and in how clothes fit. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve the result, although natural ageing will still bring some change.
Risks and limitations#
Minor wound problems are relatively common after a thigh lift, because the groin is warm, moist and constantly moving. The main risks include:
- wound separation or delayed healing, most often in the groin, which usually heals with dressings but can take time;
- scar widening or migration, where the scar drifts lower than planned or becomes more visible;
- seroma (fluid collection) and swelling of the lower legs from disturbed lymphatic drainage;
- distortion of the genital area from tension on the groin skin, which careful anchoring aims to avoid;
- numbness of the inner thigh skin, often improving over months;
- asymmetry, contour irregularities or residual loose skin;
- infection, bleeding, blood clots and the general risks of anaesthesia.
A thigh lift does not build muscle or remove cellulite, and it trades loose skin for a lasting scar that is visible in some clothing. For a broader view of checks worth making before any surgery abroad, see Is Plastic Surgery in Turkey Safe?.
Planning your treatment in Turkey#
You start by sending photos of your thighs from the front, back and sides while standing, together with your weight history and medical information. The surgeon reviews them and, if a thigh lift is appropriate, you receive a written treatment plan and quote.
Many surgeons advise staying in Turkey for around a week to ten days, so that wounds can be checked and any drains removed before travel. Long flights involve many hours of sitting, which strains the groin wound and raises the risk of clots. Follow your surgeon's advice on when to fly, wear compression and move around during the journey.
Depending on your package, PSTG coordinates:
- pre- and post-operative consultations and follow-up appointments;
- a 4–5-star hotel, and airport and clinic transfers;
- a personal interpreter or assistant and 24/7 support;
- post-operative medication, nursing and wound care;
- meals and any special dietary needs;
- virtual follow-up after you fly home and coordination with your home doctor.
Patients who have lost a lot of weight often have loose skin on the arms as well. An arm lift may be combined with a thigh lift or planned for a later trip, depending on what the surgeon considers safe.
Where treatment takes place#
Your operation takes place at a contracted healthcare institution authorised for international health tourism, in Istanbul or Antalya. The treating surgeon examines you, chooses the technique and makes every clinical decision. PSTG, a TÜRSAB-affiliated health-tourism intermediary, coordinates everything around the treatment and shares the institution's and surgeon's details before you book.
If loose thigh skin is affecting your comfort or confidence, you are welcome to send your photos for a free, no-obligation assessment. You can also explore the other plastic surgery procedures available before deciding.
