Liposuction in Turkey

Table of Content
Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat through small incisions, using a thin tube called a cannula connected to suction. It is used to reshape areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, back and under the chin when fat there has not responded to diet and exercise. If you are planning liposuction in Turkey, Plastic Surgery Turkey Group (PSTG) coordinates your assessment, travel and aftercare, and the procedure is performed by the treating surgeon at a contracted healthcare institution in Istanbul or Antalya.
Liposuction changes shape rather than weight. It works on the fat layer just under the skin, and the result depends heavily on how well your skin can contract afterwards. You can compare it with the other body procedures in our plastic surgery procedures.
Liposuction at a glance#
- What it is: removal of localised fat through small incisions to improve contour.
- Anaesthesia: general anaesthesia for several areas; a small single area may be treated under local anaesthesia with or without sedation.
- Operating time: typically between one and four hours, depending on the number of areas and the volume removed.
- Hospital stay: smaller procedures may be same-day; after larger or multi-area liposuction a one-night stay is common.
- Time in Turkey: many patients plan around five to seven days, depending on the areas treated. The surgeon confirms the exact stay.
- Back to desk work: often within about a week for smaller areas, longer after 360 or several areas. Strenuous exercise waits several weeks.
- Final result: the contour appears gradually over three to six months as swelling settles.
- Usually not advised if: your main concern is loose skin or separated muscles, your BMI is above the surgeon's safe range, or you want a large amount of weight removed.
Who is a good candidate#
You are likely to be a suitable candidate if you:
- are at or close to a weight you can maintain, with a stable weight for several months;
- have specific areas of fat that are out of proportion with the rest of your body;
- have reasonably firm, elastic skin that can tighten over the new contour;
- are in good general health and do not smoke, or can stop well before surgery;
- understand that liposuction improves contour rather than reducing overall body weight.
Liposuction is usually not the right choice if your main concern is loose or hanging skin, deep stretch marks or separated abdominal muscles. Removing fat under loose skin can make it look emptier and more wrinkled. In that situation a tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift may be recommended, sometimes combined with liposuction.
The surgeon may also advise against or delay surgery if your BMI is high, if you have heart, lung or clotting problems, uncontrolled diabetes, or if you are hoping to remove a very large volume at once. Fat that sits inside the abdomen around the organs cannot be reached by liposuction. Our article on plastic surgery and BMI explains how weight affects safety and results.
Techniques and options#
Treatment areas#
The most commonly treated areas are:
- abdomen, flanks ("love handles") and waist;
- lower and upper back, including the bra line;
- inner and outer thighs and knees;
- upper arms, which have their own guide in our article on arm liposuction;
- chin and neck;
- male chest, when enlargement is due to fat rather than gland tissue.
Treating several connected areas together, such as the whole midsection in lipo 360, is chosen when the aim is to reshape the waist from every angle rather than reduce one spot. Our guide to what 360 lipo is, which areas it treats and how recovery goes explains it in detail.
Liposuction compared with 360 lipo, Vaser and a tummy tuck#
The table shows how the options that people most often compare differ. The surgeon recommends one after examining your skin, fat and goals.
| Standard liposuction | Lipo 360 | Vaser or high-definition liposuction | Tummy tuck | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Removes fat from one or a few areas | Treats the abdomen, flanks, waist and lower back together | Uses ultrasound to loosen fat, sometimes for finer contouring | Removes loose skin and repairs separated muscles |
| Best suited to | Localised fat with good skin tone | Fat all around the midsection with good skin tone | Fibrous areas, or lean patients wanting more detailed shaping | Loose skin, stretch marks, separated muscles |
| Tightens loose skin | No | No | Not in a way that replaces skin removal | Yes, by removing it |
| Repairs muscle separation | No | No | No | Yes, usually |
| Scars | Small entry-point scars | Small entry-point scars | Small entry-point scars | Low hip-to-hip scar |
| Typical operating time | One to three hours | Often longer, up to around four hours | Often longer than standard | Around two to four hours |
| Recovery | Lighter, with a compression garment | More demanding because a larger area is treated | Similar to the area treated | Longest, with drains and restricted activity |
| Main limit | Does not treat skin or muscle | Does not tighten loose abdominal skin | Device does not replace surgical judgement | Scar length and a longer recovery |

Methods#
All forms of liposuction use a cannula. What differs is how the fat is loosened before removal:
- Tumescent liposuction: a large volume of fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline is injected first to reduce bleeding and discomfort. This is the basis of most modern liposuction.
- Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): the cannula vibrates, which can make removal easier in fibrous areas such as the back or in repeat procedures.
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (for example Vaser): ultrasound energy loosens fat before suction. Some surgeons use it for fibrous areas or for more detailed contouring, including high-definition work in lean patients.
- Laser-assisted liposuction: laser energy is used to break up fat. It is used by some surgeons, often for smaller areas.
These tools help the surgeon, but none of them tightens loose skin in a way that replaces skin removal, and the surgeon's judgement matters more than the device. The surgeon recommends a method based on the areas, the type of fat and your skin.
Fat transfer#
The fat removed can sometimes be purified and reinjected elsewhere, for example into the buttocks in a Brazilian butt lift or into the breasts or face. This is a separate procedure with its own risks and planning.
How the procedure is carried out#
You meet the surgeon in person before surgery. The surgeon examines each area, pinches the skin to assess its elasticity, and marks the areas to be treated while you stand. Blood tests and anaesthetic checks follow.
On the day:
- liposuction of several areas is usually done under general anaesthesia; a small single area may be treated under local anaesthesia with or without sedation;
- the surgeon makes small incisions, often a few millimetres long, in discreet places, injects the tumescent fluid and then removes fat in a fan-like pattern to keep the contour smooth;
- the incisions are closed or left to drain, and you are fitted with a compression garment before leaving theatre.
Patients having smaller procedures may return to the hotel the same day; after larger or multi-area liposuction a one-night stay for monitoring is common.
Recovery and results#
Recovery generally follows this pattern:
- First few days: soreness similar to deep bruising, swelling and some fluid leaking from the small incisions are normal. Prescribed medication helps with discomfort, and walking from the first day supports circulation.
- First one to two weeks: bruising peaks and then fades. The compression garment is worn day and night as instructed. Some surgeons recommend lymphatic massage.
- Weeks two to six: swelling reduces steadily. Areas may feel firm, lumpy or numb for a while; this usually settles.
- Three to six months: the contour becomes clearer as residual swelling resolves. Lower-body areas often take longest.
A realistic result is a smoother, more proportionate shape in the treated areas. Fat cells removed do not grow back, but the fat cells that remain can still enlarge if you gain weight, so keeping a stable weight is what protects the result. Liposuction does not remove cellulite and does not tighten loose skin on its own. You can view 360 liposuction before-and-after photos to see how results differ between body types. Each photo is one patient, so use them to understand what is realistic rather than as a promise.
Risks and limitations#
Liposuction is surgery and carries real risks:
- bruising, swelling and prolonged numbness;
- contour irregularities, dents or asymmetry, which occasionally need correction;
- fluid collection (seroma) or bleeding;
- infection at the incision sites;
- skin discolouration or small scars at the entry points;
- loose skin that becomes more noticeable once the fat is removed;
- rarely, serious complications such as blood clots, fat embolism, fluid imbalance or injury to deeper structures.
The risk increases with the volume of fat removed, the number of areas treated and the length of the operation, which is why surgeons set limits on how much is done in one session. Combining liposuction with other operations also changes the risk, and the surgeon decides what is sensible for you.
How the price is built#
Liposuction is priced as a plan, not a fixed package, because the areas and volume differ from one patient to the next. The main things that shape a quote are:
- how many areas are treated, for example one area compared with a 360 plan;
- the method the surgeon recommends and the expected operating time;
- anaesthesia and whether a one-night hospital stay is needed;
- whether it is combined with another procedure, such as a tummy tuck or fat transfer;
- how many nights you stay in Turkey and what is coordinated around surgery: transfers, interpreter or assistant, medication, compression garment, nursing and follow-up.
PSTG gives a written treatment plan and quote after the surgeon has reviewed your photos and medical history. When you compare quotes from any provider, ask in writing how many areas the price covers, whether the compression garment, medication and follow-up visits are included, how the hospital stay is handled and what happens if a touch-up is needed.
Flying in from the UK, the US or Australia#
Liposuction recovery is lighter than for a tummy tuck, but long flights still raise the risk of blood clots after any surgery under general anaesthesia.
- From the UK and Europe: flights to Istanbul are usually a few hours, so a short trip with a companion is practical for smaller procedures.
- From the US and Canada: flights are typically ten hours or more. Surgeons are often more cautious about when you fly after larger or multi-area liposuction.
- From Australia and New Zealand: with connections, the journey commonly takes 20 hours or more each way. Plan a longer stay and ask the surgeon when you are fit to fly.
On the flight, wear your compression garment, walk the aisle regularly and drink water. Tell your own doctor about your plans in advance, bring your operation notes and medication list home, and set up virtual follow-up for any swelling, fluid or contour questions.
Planning your treatment in Turkey#
The process starts with an online assessment. You send photos of the areas you want treated from the front, sides and back, your height, weight and weight history, and your medical history. The surgeon uses these to give an initial view of whether liposuction alone is likely to help, which areas make sense and whether your skin may need a lift. A written treatment plan and quote follow once this medical assessment is done.
Many patients plan to stay in Turkey for around five to seven days, depending on the areas treated, so the surgeon can review you before you fly. PSTG coordinates:
- airport, hotel and clinic transfers;
- a 4-5-star hotel stay, with meals and any special dietary needs arranged;
- a personal interpreter or assistant;
- pre- and post-operative consultations and follow-up appointments;
- post-operative medication, nursing and wound care, and your compression garment fittings;
- 24/7 support during your stay.
Once you are home, we arrange virtual follow-up and can coordinate with your home doctor if you need local checks.
Where treatment takes place#
Surgery takes place at contracted healthcare institutions authorised for international health tourism in Istanbul and Antalya. The treating surgeon makes every clinical decision, including which areas are treated, the method used, how much fat is removed and when you are fit to fly. PSTG is a health-tourism intermediary affiliated with TÜRSAB: we coordinate your treatment and stay, and we do not perform medical procedures.
