Many international patients travel to Turkey for cosmetic surgery, dental work and hair transplants. For most of them, the process follows the same path: an online assessment, a written plan and quote, a stay in Turkey of several days to a few weeks, surgery at a contracted healthcare institution, a recovery period in Turkey and follow-up once they are home. Whether it suits you depends less on the country than on the surgeon, the plan and your own health.

This guide explains how treatment in Turkey works for a patient from abroad, what a package usually covers, how long to plan for, the risks to weigh and how to compare quotes. Plastic Surgery Turkey Group (PSTG) is a health-tourism intermediary affiliated with TÜRSAB. It coordinates the practical side of the trip, and the treating surgeon at a contracted institution in Istanbul or Antalya makes every clinical decision. For an overview of the procedures, see our plastic surgery in Turkey section.

Why international patients choose Turkey#

People travel to Turkey for surgery for practical reasons, and each one has a limit worth knowing.

  • An established health-tourism sector. Turkey has private hospitals and clinics that are authorised to treat international patients. Interpreters, coordinators and packages are part of that sector, but they do not make every provider equal.
  • Short travel from Europe and the Middle East. Istanbul and Antalya are a few hours' flight from many European cities. A shorter flight does not remove the clot risk of flying soon after an operation.
  • Packages that combine the essentials. Consultations, hotel, transfers and an interpreter are often organised together, so you are not booking ten separate services in a country you do not know.
  • Scheduling. A date can often be planned around your own calendar. It is only confirmed once the surgeon has reviewed your case.
  • Cost. Cost varies by case; there is no standard price.

The destination is the least important choice you make. The surgeon, the facility, a realistic plan and enough time to recover matter far more.

Procedures international patients commonly travel for#

The same procedures that are popular at home are the ones most often planned in Turkey. Each has its own candidacy limits and recovery, so read the procedure page before planning a trip.

  • Nose surgery. Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose and can improve breathing at the same time. Swelling settles over many months, so the final shape takes time.
  • Breast surgery. Breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction change size, shape or position. Implants are not lifetime devices and may need replacing later.
  • Body contouring. Liposuction removes stubborn fat but is not a weight-loss treatment. A tummy tuck removes loose skin and can repair separated abdominal muscles. A Brazilian butt lift moves your own fat to the buttocks.
  • After pregnancy. A mommy makeover combines procedures for the breasts and abdomen, usually once you have finished having children.
  • Face. A facelift and eyelid surgery treat ageing changes in the face, neck and eyes.
  • Hair and teeth. Hair transplants and dental treatment are planned in a similar way, with their own assessments and timelines.

How the process works, step by step#

Online assessment#

You send your medical history, current medication and photographs. The surgeon reviews them to judge whether the procedure is realistic for you and what the likely plan is. Be complete and honest here: a past clot, a heart condition, smoking or recent weight changes can change the plan or rule surgery out.

A written plan and quote#

If the surgeon thinks you may be suitable, you receive a written plan and a personal quote. It should list the procedures, the expected hospital nights, the hotel nights, what aftercare is included and how long you should stay. Read it carefully and ask questions before you book flights.

Arrival and the consultation in person#

You are met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Before surgery you see the surgeon in person, have blood tests and other checks, and meet the anaesthetic team. The final plan is confirmed only after this examination, and the surgeon may change it or decide that surgery should not go ahead.

Surgery and the first days#

The operation takes place at a contracted healthcare institution. Depending on the procedure, you may stay in hospital for one or more nights before moving to the hotel. In the first days you can expect swelling, tiredness and discomfort, and you may need compression garments, wound care and help with simple tasks.

Check-ups and going home#

You return for check-ups during your stay. The surgeon decides when you are fit to fly. After you return home, follow-up continues remotely, usually by messages and photographs, and it helps to share your operation notes with your own doctor.

What a package usually includes#

The word "package" can mean very different things, so always ask for a written list. A package coordinated by PSTG typically covers:

  • consultations before and after the operation
  • hotel accommodation (4 to 5 stars) and meals
  • airport, hotel and hospital transfers
  • a personal interpreter or assistant and 24/7 support
  • post-operative medication, nursing and wound care during your stay
  • follow-up appointments in Turkey and virtual follow-up after you fly home
  • special dietary needs where requested, and coordination with your home doctor

Your written plan confirms exactly what is included for your case. The full coverage page explains the package in more detail.

How long to stay and when you can fly#

The length of stay depends on the procedure, whether procedures are combined, and how you heal. A short facial or breast procedure usually needs less time in Turkey than a tummy tuck or a combined body operation. Your surgeon gives you an expected length of stay in the plan and confirms when you can fly after examining you.

Flying soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs. Your surgeon may advise walking during the flight, drinking enough fluid, wearing compression stockings and, in some cases, medication to reduce the clot risk. Book a flexible return ticket and do not shorten the stay to save time.

Recovery is not a holiday#

Turkey has beautiful coastlines and historic cities, and it is tempting to plan a holiday around surgery. In practice, the recovery period limits what you can do.

  • Sun and heat. Fresh scars and swollen tissue should be kept out of strong sun, and many surgeons advise against hot baths, saunas and long periods in the heat.
  • Swimming. Pools and the sea are usually off limits until the wounds have healed, which your surgeon will confirm.
  • Activity. Gentle walking is encouraged to lower the clot risk, but long sightseeing days, lifting and exercise are not.

If you want to see Istanbul or Antalya, plan it before the operation or bring a companion and keep the days gentle. Many patients simply rest.

Who should not plan surgery abroad#

Surgery abroad is not right for everyone, and a responsible surgeon will say so. A heart, lung or clotting condition, smoking, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a weight above what the surgeon considers safe, or being unable to stay for the recommended time can mean extra checks, a delay or advice against surgery. Our guide to BMI and plastic surgery explains how weight is assessed.

Safety and choosing a provider#

Cosmetic surgery carries risks in Turkey as anywhere, and travel adds some of its own, such as flying soon after surgery and being far from the surgeon if a problem appears later. What lowers those risks is the same everywhere: a qualified surgeon who examines you before surgery, an authorised facility, a plan that fits your health, enough time to recover and a clear aftercare arrangement. Our article is plastic surgery in Turkey safe covers the risks and the questions to ask in detail, and the guide on how to compare plastic surgery clinics in Turkey explains how to check surgeons, facilities and reviews.

How the cost is worked out#

There is no standard price for cosmetic surgery in Turkey, and no figure on a website applies to your case. The quote depends on the procedure and technique, the operating and anaesthesia time, any implants or materials, the hospital nights, the hotel nights and the aftercare included. Every patient receives a personal written quote after the medical assessment.

When you compare quotes, compare them line by line in writing: which procedures, which hospital, how many nights, which garments and medication, and what follow-up after you return home. A quote that looks low because it leaves out aftercare or hospital nights is not comparable. The article on tummy tuck cost in Turkey shows how one procedure's quote is built.

If you have a problem after you return home#

Keep your operation notes and give a copy to your own doctor. What to do if something worries you after you fly home, and which symptoms need emergency care, is covered in our article on the risks of plastic surgery in Turkey.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether a trip abroad suits me?

It depends on your health, the procedure and how long you can stay. A heart, lung or clotting condition, smoking, pregnancy or a weight above what the surgeon considers safe can mean extra checks, a delay or advice against surgery. The surgeon makes that judgement after reviewing your medical history and examining you.

Why do people travel to Turkey for cosmetic surgery?

Turkey has a large health-tourism sector with institutions used to treating international patients, and the flight from Europe is short. Packages that combine consultations, hotel, transfers and an interpreter are another reason. The choice should still rest on the surgeon and the plan, not on the destination.

What does a cosmetic surgery package in Turkey usually include?

A package coordinated by PSTG typically includes consultations before and after surgery, hotel accommodation, transfers, an interpreter or assistant, 24/7 support, nursing and wound care, follow-up appointments and virtual follow-up after you fly home. Your written plan confirms exactly what is included for your case.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey?

It depends on the procedure, whether procedures are combined and how you heal. Body procedures and combined operations usually need a longer stay than smaller procedures. Your surgeon gives an expected length of stay and confirms when you are fit to fly, so book a flexible return ticket.

How is the cost of cosmetic surgery in Turkey worked out?

It depends on the procedure, the technique, the operating time, any implants, the hospital and hotel nights and the aftercare included. There is no standard price; every patient receives a personal written quote after the medical assessment. Compare quotes line by line in writing.
