BBL Recovery and Long-Term Results in Turkey

BBL recovery in Turkey follows a predictable pattern. For about the first two weeks you avoid sitting or lying directly on your buttocks, you wear a compression garment as instructed, and you walk a little every day. The shape keeps changing for three to six months as swelling settles and part of the transferred fat is reabsorbed, and the surviving fat then behaves like the rest of your body fat.
This guide walks through the timeline, the sitting and sleeping rules, what decides how much fat survives, how to keep the result and when to call your surgeon. It applies to a standard BBL and to a skinny BBL, where the donor fat margin is smaller and care in the first weeks matters even more. For the full operation, see our Brazilian butt lift page. Your own surgeon's instructions always come first.
The first 24 to 48 hours#
After surgery you are monitored in hospital, usually overnight. The liposuction areas feel bruised and tight, the buttocks feel swollen and sore, and you are fitted with a compression garment to control swelling and support the donor areas. Pain is managed with prescribed medication, and you may be given antibiotics to lower the risk of infection. Drains are used by some surgeons, depending on technique.
You are encouraged to take short walks from the first day. Walking helps circulation and lowers the risk of blood clots, which matters after any operation under general anaesthesia.
Week by week#
- Weeks one and two: this is the no-sitting phase. Pressure on the buttocks can reduce the blood supply to the new fat, so you avoid sitting or lying directly on them. Surgeons often use a special cushion that takes weight off the buttocks and loads the thighs, and you sleep on your front or side. You keep walking, wear the garment and attend the first check-ups.
- Weeks three and four: sitting is gradually reintroduced as your surgeon allows, often for short periods at first. Many people return to desk work if they can stand, shift position or use a cushion. Swelling continues to settle.
- Weeks six to eight: many patients can build up to workouts and more active routines, still avoiding high-impact exercise and heavy squatting until the surgeon clears it.
- Three to six months: the shape becomes clearer and more stable as swelling resolves and the fat that survives establishes its own blood supply.
These are typical ranges, not promises. Your surgeon sets your own timeline from how you are healing.
Sitting, sleeping and moving#
The sitting rule is the one most likely to affect your result, so it is worth being strict about it.
- Avoid sitting or lying directly on the buttocks in the first two weeks, or for as long as your surgeon advises.
- Use the recommended cushion when you cannot avoid sitting, and keep sitting periods short when you begin again.
- Sleep on your front or side. A pillow under the thighs can help you stay off your back.
- Plan car, restaurant and flight seating before you travel, so sitting is not a surprise.
- Take short, regular walks. Long periods of lying still raise the risk of blood clots.
If you cannot avoid sitting for a long time, tell your surgeon before you travel.
Swelling, bruising and sensation#
Swelling is the main reason the early result is not the final one. It is usually worst in the first one to two weeks, then fades gradually, and the lower back, hips and thighs can stay puffy for a few months. Bruising around the donor areas often turns yellow and green before it clears, and it may track downwards with gravity.
Numbness, tingling or patches of altered sensation over the liposuction areas are common and usually improve over weeks to months, although some change can remain. Firm or lumpy areas under the skin are also common while the tissue settles, and gentle massage is sometimes recommended once the surgeon allows. Tell the surgeon about any lump that is growing, very tender or red.
Compression garments and nutrition#
A compression garment supports swelling control and comfort over the liposuction areas. Surgeons often ask patients to wear one for several weeks, commonly in the region of six to eight, though the exact protocol and any foam or board inserts depend on the surgeon. Follow the schedule exactly: too little or too much compression can both cause problems.
Eat enough protein, drink plenty of water and avoid crash diets while you heal. The body needs fuel to repair tissue and keep the new fat supplied. Smoking and vaping reduce blood flow, so stop well before surgery and stay off them while you heal.
How much fat survives#
Not all transferred fat survives. Part of it is reabsorbed in the first weeks and months, and the final volume is smaller than the volume placed. Surgeons sometimes place slightly more than the final target because of this, within safe limits. No surgeon can promise a figure, because survival depends on your tissue, the technique, how much fat was placed, how closely you follow the sitting rules, and whether you smoke.
The early look is not the final one. The buttocks often look larger and rounder in the first weeks because of swelling, then settle. Judging the result at four weeks is too early. Most surgeons judge the result at three to six months.
Keeping your result long term#
Fat that survives behaves like the rest of your body fat. It can grow or shrink with your weight, but it does not move around the body. To keep the shape:
- keep your weight stable, because large gains alter proportions and large losses shrink the transferred fat;
- eat a balanced diet and avoid extreme dieting;
- return to exercise in stages, then build lower-body strength once the surgeon clears you, as muscle supports the shape under the fat;
- avoid smoking, which affects circulation and skin quality;
- expect pregnancy, menopause and ageing to change fat distribution over time.
A BBL does not tighten loose buttock skin, so the skin's quality and your lifestyle both influence how the result looks years later. Some patients consider a second session if they want more volume or after weight changes, which is a decision to make with the surgeon once the first result has settled.

This is one patient's result. Every body heals differently, so you can use the BBL before-and-after gallery and our guide on how to read BBL before-and-after photos to understand what is realistic rather than as a promise.
Recovering in Turkey#
Many surgeons advise staying in Turkey for around a week to ten days after a BBL, so the first check-ups take place and you are walking comfortably before the flight home. Depending on your package, PSTG coordinates a hotel stay, airport and clinic transfers, a personal interpreter or assistant, medication, nursing and wound care, follow-up appointments and 24/7 support. After you fly home we arrange virtual follow-up and can coordinate with your home doctor.
The surgeon confirms when you are fit to fly. Long flights raise the risk of blood clots, so follow the advice on compression, walking and hydration, and plan how you will sit on the journey. If you are still choosing a plan, what shapes the price of a BBL in Turkey explains how a quote is built.
When to call your surgeon#
Some swelling, bruising and tightness are normal. Contact the treating surgeon or the PSTG team promptly if you notice any of the following:
- a fever, spreading redness, heat or discharge from an incision;
- pain that is getting worse instead of better, or a hard, very painful area;
- sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, a fast heartbeat or coughing up blood, which are emergencies that need urgent medical care where you are;
- swelling, pain or redness in one leg, which can be a sign of a blood clot;
- a sudden change in the colour or temperature of the skin over the buttocks;
- fluid collecting under the skin that feels tense or is increasing.
If you are unsure, call. A quick check is better than waiting.
If you are thinking about a BBL and want to know whether it suits your body, send us your photos for a free, no-obligation assessment. You can take your time with the surgeon's opinion and the written plan before deciding anything.
