6 before and after photos for mommy makeover

How to read these photos

3 of the 6 after photos in this gallery were taken on the operating table, right after surgery. Swelling, bruising and taping follow, and the shape keeps settling for months, so the healed result will look different from these photos.

Every photo shows one individual patient. Results vary with anatomy, skin quality, health and aftercare, and these photos are not a promise of your outcome. The treating surgeon will tell you what is realistic for you at consultation.

What a mommy makeover combines

A mommy makeover is a plan that combines procedures for changes left by pregnancy and breastfeeding, most often a tummy tuck with repair of separated abdominal muscles, a breast lift with or without implants, and liposuction of the waist. The treating surgeon decides each patient's combination, so two photos here may show different procedures. Look at the abdomen and the breasts separately: flatness and scar position of the abdomen; height, fullness and nipple position of the breasts.

Who these photos are relevant to

They are most comparable if you have finished having children and your weight is stable; your surgeon will advise how long to wait after breastfeeding. A later pregnancy can stretch the abdomen and breasts again. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for combined surgery: a longer operation means a longer recovery and a higher risk of blood clots, so the surgeon may split the plan into two stages.

Scars, risks and limits

Expect a low abdominal scar, a scar around the belly button and breast scars that depend on the technique. Risks include seroma, blood clots, wound-healing problems and the risks of general anaesthesia, which the surgeon and anaesthetist discuss with you. How the result develops

  1. First week: Plan for help at home; your surgeon will advise on activity, compression garment and bra.
  2. Weeks 2–6: Swelling of the abdomen and breasts is at its most noticeable. Lifting children and heavy objects stays off-limits until the surgeon clears it.
  3. Months 2–3: Most swelling has gone; breasts settle lower and softer if implants were placed.
  4. Months 6–12: Scars soften and lighten and the combined result is settled. Healed after photos are taken from this stage.
