What a facelift changes, and what it does not
A facelift lifts the deeper tissues of the lower face and neck and removes excess skin, which improves jowls, a blurred jawline and loose neck skin. Techniques such as deep-plane or vertical lifts work at different depths; your surgeon chooses based on your anatomy. Compare the jawline, the corners of the mouth and the neck angle, from the side and from the front.
A facelift does not change skin texture, fine lines or pigmentation, and it does not stop ageing. Brows, eyelids and volume loss are treated by other procedures.

They are most comparable if you have sagging of the lower face and neck and are in good health. Smoking clearly raises the risk of wound-healing problems, and your surgeon will want any long-term conditions such as high blood pressure to be well controlled. Scars and risks
Scars run in or around the hairline and around the ear. The main risks are a collection of blood under the skin (haematoma), nerve injury that is usually temporary, numbness, hair loss along the incisions, rarely skin problems, and the risks of anaesthesia, which are discussed with you before surgery. How the result develops
- Week 1: Swelling and bruising are at their peak. Your surgeon will advise on head position and dressings.
- Weeks 2–3: Most bruising fades and stitches or dressings are removed as your surgeon advises. Some patients feel ready to be seen in public, with some remaining swelling.
- Months 1–3: The face can feel tight and numb in places as swelling continues to settle.
- Months 6–12: The result is settled and scars have faded further. The face continues to age naturally from this point.
